March 25,
2008---Sandusky--- Prior to the Second district meeting, DVP
Andy Drwal hosted a BWC roundtable featuring Janet Wilkes, a BWC
representative along with OAPFF staff and officers. Topics of
discussion were claims denial, the role of light duty and proper
processing of work comp claims.
Second Dist VP Drwal
then called the meeting to order, introducing OAPFF President Mark
Sanders, Secretary Treasurer Mark Horton, IAFF 8th Dist
VP Tom Miller and the rest of the OAPFF officers and staff.
Retiree VP Tom Rave
spoke about pension matters and issues with medicare and OP&F
insurance. The fund is working through the problem and hopes to
have it remedied soon. VP Rave then updated the progress on the
Offset and Windfall Act, this would provide full Social security
benefits to our members who qualify and eliminate the ‘penalty’ our
pension members currently incur. This legislation is in Congress
and its fate will be monitored closely. The reelection of Larry
Petrick was the next topic. “Larry has done and excellent job at
the pension board.” Rave commented. The OAPFF endorses Larry
Petrick for election to the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Board.
Brother Brian Crandal,
retired Sandusky fire fighter and also a Sandusky City Commissioner
rose to speak on behalf of Dennis Murray Jr., a candidate for state
legislature from Erie County.
Mark Lundy spoke briefly
on the process for Ohio fire certifications. For all the details
visit www.ems.ohio.gov. Due to recent changes your EMS card will
now expire on your birthday of the expiration year. At that time
you will be required to recertify all other re-certifications as
well.
Doug Stern, editor of
the First Due News and content editor of oapff.com reminded members
to submit pictures and articles so that the website and magazine can
continue to be successful.
IAFF 8th Dist
VP Tom Miller talked a bit about the IAFF and the race for
president.
“The OAPFF is
financially sound,” commented Secretary Treasurer Mark Horton. Only
asking for a minimal increase in per capita at conference is an
example of that noted Horton.
President Sanders spent
time talking about recent successes of the OAPFF at the state
house. Two issues, Military Leave time and the Arson Registry have
been discussed and both have been introduced on the legislative
floor. Our introduction of changes to the Collective Bargaining Law
to include over 650 of our members who serve villages of less than
5000 citizens has been well received with over 60 cosponsors in the
house and senate.
The second district
chose to endorse Mark Sanders for OAPFF President, Mark Horton for
Secretary Treasurer, Tom Rave for Retiree VP, Andy Drwal for Second
Dist VP and Dan Mitsch for Sergeant at arms. |
